The Rashaidah Tribe
Location: Hail Region, Northern Saudi Arabia
The mountains of Jabal Shammar form a natural barrier between northern Najd and the sweeping sands of the Great Nafud Desert. This region, with its good grazing lands, has long been renowned for breeding some of the finest Arabian horses. In 1878–79, Lady Anne Blunt and her husband Wilfrid Scawen Blunt famously journeyed here in search of purebred horses, visiting the court of Emir Ibn Rashid in Hail.
The Rashaidah tribe, originally based in the Hail region, are known for their nomadic traditions and have migrated across the Arabian Peninsula and into North and East Africa, with significant communities now found in Sudan and Ethiopia.
Traditional clothing among the Rashaidah reflects their Bedouin heritage and desert lifestyle. Women typically wear long, dark-coloured dresses, often in black or deep red, richly decorated with hand embroidery in bright geometric designs. Metal-thread embroidery, coins, and beads are used to adorn the bodice and head coverings, especially for festive and ceremonial garments. Headscarves are layered and often embellished with intricate beadwork or small metallic ornaments.
Men wear long, loose-fitting white or beige thobes suited to the desert climate, with a traditional head covering such as a ghutra or shemagh secured by a black agal. On formal occasions or during cold desert nights, a wool bisht is worn, sometimes trimmed in gold.
The Hail area is also rich in ancient rock art. These carvings depict a prehistoric landscape more abundant in wildlife than today, featuring animals such as ostriches, ibex, cheetahs, and even domesticated cattle. Among the most remarkable finds is a unique image of a horse-drawn chariot—an extraordinary representation of early transportation in the Arabian Peninsula.
