The Sulaym Tribe
Location: Red Sea Coastal Region, Western Arabia
The Sulaym tribe, closely related to the Harb, traditionally lived a semi-settled life along the Red Sea coast. Their livelihoods combined fishing, trading, and herding, reflecting both maritime and desert influences.
While they share the basic cut of their garments with the Harb, Sulaym dress is distinguished by its unique aesthetic. Their clothing features distinctive patchwork, intricate quilting, and detailed embroidery, setting it apart from neighbouring styles. Unlike the Harb, the Sulaym do not typically favour blue fabric, opting instead for a different palette and textile approach.
A notable figure associated with this region is T.E. Lawrence, known as Lawrence of Arabia, who participated in the Arab Revolt across the Hijaz, Jordan, and Syria between 1916 and 1918. One of his abayas, likely woven in Syria, is preserved in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford—an enduring artefact of a pivotal moment in modern Arab history.
