The Bani Saʿad Tribe
Location: Southeast of Ṭāʾif, Hijaz, Western Saudi Arabia
The Bani Saʿad tribe lives in a fertile region southeast of Ṭāʾif, where terraced fields and hilltop villages are nestled among rugged mountains. This area is of particular historical and cultural significance, as the Prophet Muhammad’s wet nurse, Ḥalīmah al-Saʿdiyyah, belonged to this tribe.
Traditional clothing in the highland Ṭāʾif region is designed for warmth in the cooler mountain climate, typically tight-fitting and fully lined. Garments are richly adorned with vibrant, geometric embroidery that decorates hems, side panels, cuffs, backs, the shins of pantaloons, and headdresses. The bodice is often left uncovered to allow silver jewellery and ornate belts to be prominently displayed.
On festive occasions, Bani Saʿad women may wear up to seven decorative headpieces, layered one atop the other, each intricately embellished with handmade metal beads that shimmer with movement and light.
